Jane Crafter was born on 14 December 1955 in Perth, Western Australia. She is an Australian-American golfer and a broadcaster. Her nickname is Crafty. She started playing Golf at the age of 6. She was a qualified pharmacist turned professional golfer. Her hobbies include collecting golf antiques, teddy bears and wines and she enjoys gardening, growing orchids, cooking and fishing. She has two cats, sugar and spice. Now she works as a golf commentator for ESPN and NBC.
In 2004 Jane was honoured as one of South Australia’s Greatest Ever Sports Stars by The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Research Foundation. She is a playing editor for Golf Digest. Jane once dabbled in pharmacy as a career. Encouraged by her father, she spent several of her formative years in Adelaide getting a degree, and then worked at a neighbourhood chemist for another three years. But then she felt sufficiently confident in her golf game to take a shot at the United States Tour. She has not looked back.
After the death of her father she set her future career path, following her father footsteps into the world of golf commentary in stints with ESPN and NBC. There is still a place in her life for playing, but it is why she does not practice it anymore. Jane had been an outstanding amateur golfer before she turned professional in 1981, feeling that her game was good enough.
In 1981, originally qualified for the LPGA tour at the LPGA final qualifying tournament in January, where Jane tied for sixth. In 1982, top finish was a tie for 18th and the Rail Charity Golf Classic. In 1983, best finish was a tie for eighth at the SAFECO Classic. In 1984 she was tied for second at the Rail Charity Golf Classic. In 1985 she took runner up honors at the LPGA Corning Classic. In 1986, her season-best finish was third at the S&H golf Classic, where she recorded first ace of her LPGA career. In 1987, she finished second at the S&H golf Classic, where she recorded her career low-round of 64. In 1988, best finish was a tie for 10th at the USX Golf Classic.
In 1989 Jane tied for third at the red Robin Kyocera Inamori Classic. In 1990 she captured her first LPGA victory at the Phar-Mor at Inverrary, where she holed a 40 foot birdie putt on the final hole to win. In 1991, best finish was a tie for 17th at the SAFECO Classic. In 1992 she finished in second place at the PING-Cellular one LPGA Golf Championship, where she lost to Nancy Lopez in a sudden death play-off; tied her career-low score of 64 during the first round, won the Australian Ladies Masters on the ALPG Tour. In 1993 she finished third at both the PING/Welch’s Championship in Tucson and the LPGA corning Classic.
In 2001 she tied for 10th on two occasions. In 2002 she posted her season best finish at the Longs Drugs Challenge. In 2003, Jane Crafter recorded her season best finish at the Office Depot Championship Hosted by Amy Alcott, where she tied for 13th.
